How can we build our passion?

I chose to be interested in science. I chose to pursue chemistry. I chose to return to school pursuing a PhD degree while choosing science writing as one of my career paths.

If you’d asked me what I’m passionate about, I’d say chemistry, science, science communication, and writing in general. But how do I define what I’m passionate about? Is it privileged and lucky for me to already “find” my passion?⠀

For a long time I’ve been advised to find my passion, and then all of the great success would come along if I’ve followed my passion. The ideas around finding one’s passion are, I realized, imperfect in some ways.⠀

I’m not born with it as a given passion. I think I intentionally “chose” them. I chose to be interested in science. I chose to pursue chemistry. I chose to return to school pursuing a PhD degree while choosing science writing as one of my career paths.⠀

If I’ve never gone to study chemistry, right now I’d maybe be doing a PhD in marine science because I adore whales since I was little. Maybe I won’t be doing a PhD at all but I’d be sure to have found another passion.⠀

Passion is a mindset. Passion means things you do the most. Often, it’s something you’re good at and you’re trying to be better in.⠀You’re happy with what you’re doing.

I never thought I was the best at chemistry. (Truth revealed: I failed in physical chemistry in college.) The idea of using my second language in English to voice myself cringes me. But if I was waiting to feel secured about everything I made, I’d never done a single post or reached out to science communication community ever.⠀

Build and develop the skills at what you chose to be passionate about – what you’re interested in, would lead you find your passion.
